Savior in Spilled
Blood
The Cathedral of
the Resurrection of Christ on the Griboedov Canal was built in 1883-1907.
Here on March 1, 1881, an attempt was made against Emperor Alexander II, as a
result of which he was killed. On the site of death it was decided to erect a
chapel - a monument to the deceased sovereign. Spas-on-the-Blood was created
on the basis of an unusual engineering solution, which was influenced by its
location on the bank of the canal. To ensure that the canal water does not
penetrate the building, here, when strengthening the soil, the use of piles
was abandoned. For the first time in urban planning, a concrete base was
erected beneath all the area of the building.
